Warning: please do not bother to make these if you’re not into intense chocolate. Grownup chocolate. Deep, goooey, messy chocolate. They’re not cheap to make, either: you’re gonna need a can of pumpkin, which, if you haven’t purchased it during Pumpkin Marketing Periods (winter holidays) you may have trouble finding. At ODF, we stockpile, for that very reason. If you find yourself desperately in need in, say, May or June, you’ll probably have to call me, because Trader Joe will not have any pumpkin. Safeway might, but it may have been there since the 90’s, so, bear that in mind.

Additional warning: these puppies are not the least bit low in calories. They have LOTS of calories. Thing is, though, they are actually good food. Lots of protein, lots of healthy almond oil, lots of fiber, vitamin A and other good pumpkin things, and of course my own personal favorite food group, CHOCOLATE. Lots and lots of chocolate.

Other folks have made this recipe substituting honey or even (gasp!) SUGAR for the “Just Like Sugar” sweetener that it calls for. Your call, of course, but you know what I’m gonna say about that.

Fabulous with whipped cream, or — better yet — mascarpone with vanilla or bourbon or rum, slightly sweetened with Just Like Sugar.

So, skip dinner. Just go straight for dessert. Auntie L might wash this down with a little bourbon and branch. A good port would be nice, or just a juicy little cabernet. It’s good for you.

Oh, and just one more little caveat. This is not the kind of food you share with a casual acquaintance. That guy you met on eHarmony you’re not sure about? Think he’s either cute and intense or a potential stalker? Don’t give him one of these.

  23. Destiny Zestiny Elmore via Facebook says:

Seriously?!:(. Jeeez..is there a hotel near you can stay at?

  24. That’s what we are all thinking now…

  25. Honey, that’s so wrong! Call a limo; get some other passengers together; call the TV station!

  26. I just suggested a limo. Baha. I suggested a cab too. But a 3hr ride to Jackson is going to be expensive even with 4 people.. TV station?

  27. Yes! They’d love this story! Or radio if you can’t get anybody on the tv station to answer. Call Greyhound headquarters and tell them you’re talking to the media. This is unconscionable !! The should have had you on another bus in an hour or two!

Maybe a hot tv reporter will show up to get the scoop!;)

I don’t know why I didn’t see these before. This is a perfect recipe for my friend Chelsea. She’s a great creative gal with medical reasons not to eat gluten, meat, dairy…I’ll direct her to the recipe, or maybe a better idea: bake them for her.

I think it’s weird how sugar dominates the world of sweetness, alternatives always are compared to it. I’ll do this recipe with the idea that I’m not comparing it’s sweetness to anything but itself.

Thank you Lynne, more recipes, more recipes!

  30. Elise_Ranger says:

Oops, there are eggs in the recipe. I guess that leaves Chelsea out, so I’ll be making ’em for me and Jeff.
