Warning: please do not bother to make these if you’re not into intense chocolate. Grownup chocolate. Deep, goooey, messy chocolate. They’re not cheap to make, either: you’re gonna need a can of pumpkin, which, if you haven’t purchased it during Pumpkin Marketing Periods (winter holidays) you may have trouble finding. At ODF, we stockpile, for that very reason. If you find yourself desperately in need in, say, May or June, you’ll probably have to call me, because Trader Joe will not have any pumpkin. Safeway might, but it may have been there since the 90’s, so, bear that in mind.
Additional warning: these puppies are not the least bit low in calories. They have LOTS of calories. Thing is, though, they are actually good food. Lots of protein, lots of healthy almond oil, lots of fiber, vitamin A and other good pumpkin things, and of course my own personal favorite food group, CHOCOLATE. Lots and lots of chocolate.
Other folks have made this recipe substituting honey or even (gasp!) SUGAR for the “Just Like Sugar” sweetener that it calls for. Your call, of course, but you know what I’m gonna say about that.
Fabulous with whipped cream, or — better yet — mascarpone with vanilla or bourbon or rum, slightly sweetened with Just Like Sugar.
So, skip dinner. Just go straight for dessert. Auntie L might wash this down with a little bourbon and branch. A good port would be nice, or just a juicy little cabernet. It’s good for you.
Oh, and just one more little caveat. This is not the kind of food you share with a casual acquaintance. That guy you met on eHarmony you’re not sure about? Think he’s either cute and intense or a potential stalker? Don’t give him one of these.
